Big News: Cursive Writing is coming to Handwritingbot!

26-2-25 Update:

We appreciate your patience as we finalise the release of cursive fonts! While we had hoped to launch it earlier, ensuring the best possible experience means taking a little extra time. The software is nearly complete and should be ready this week, after which we’ll be preparing 12,000 handwriting animations across 8 different fonts. Our best estimate for full readiness is early March.

In the meantime, we have an exciting opportunity for teachers who’d like to contribute! If you have a tablet/iPad, a stylus, and knowledge of the Playwrite USA modern Google font, you can help create handwriting animations. The money won’t be extravagant, but the work can be done in your spare time, and will take approximately 5-15 hours per font/state. You’ll need to do it in about a week, though, as we’d like to release cursive ASAP. If you’re interested, we’d love to hear from you! Please email us at [email protected]

Thank you for your support—we can’t wait to share cursive with you soon!

We’re thrilled to announce that cursive fonts are launching on Handwritingbot in February 2025! Are you ready to transform your handwriting lessons into a dynamic, engaging, customisable experience?

How Cursive Works

Unlike our print and precursive fonts, cursive requires a more advanced programming approach. Each word and animation has to be individually designed and integrated. Thanks to invaluable feedback from our community, we’ve created a robust set of over 1,000 animations across eight distinctive cursive fonts.

Here’s what’s included:

  • All 676 two-letter combinations (aa, ab, ac… zz)
  • A curated list of 200 frequently used words
  • Specialised lists of words organised by types of joins (e.g., diagonal joins to short letters, horizontal joins to tall letters, etc.)—perfect for teaching cursive in a logical, sequential way.

For any words not yet programmed in cursive, they’ll seamlessly revert to their precursive equivalent. For example, words in Victorian Cursive that aren’t available will appear as Victorian Precursive (unjoined) instead. Here is a list of available fonts and their precursive equivalents:

USA Cursive – USA1

UK Cursive – UK1Victorian Cursive – Victorian Precursive

NSW Cursive – NSW Precursive

Queensland Cursive – Queensland Precursive

Tasmanian Cursive – Tasmanian Precursive

South Australian Cursive – South Australian Precursive

New Zealand Cursive – New Zealand Precursive

What’s Next for Cursive?

We’re just getting started! We plan to expand the word list over time based on your feedback. Your input is invaluable, and we’re excited to keep improving the cursive experience.

At this stage, audio support isn’t available for cursive, but it’s something we’re considering for future updates. Stay tuned!

Be Ready for the Launch

As we finalise the release, we’ll update our homepage to reflect when cursive is officially live. Until then, feel free to explore the available print and precursive fonts here and start planning how you’ll incorporate cursive into your teaching.
